Michael Reese Nurses Alumnae Association collection of visual materials
Founded in 1881 by the United Hebrew Relief Association, Michael Reese Hospital’s first mission was to provide healthcare to immigrants. A bequest by Michael Reese (1817-1878), a German Jewish immigrant, gave the UHRA the funding needed to establish the hospital. From 1890 to 1995, the Visiting Nurse Association of Chicago employed its own nurses and other health professionals to provide health care to the underprivileged. Now the VNA Foundation operates exclusively as a grantmaking foundation, giving financial support to nonprofit organizations offering home- and community-based care to the underserved.
