Scope and Content
Correspondence, newspaper clippings, award certificates and other papers relating to the life and career of Jim Brown, DuSable High School teacher and coach of football, baseball, and basketball teams circa 1950-1980. Brown graduated from George Williams College in 1949; coached the DuSable team to the 1954 Illinois state basketball tournament (later featured in an NCAA exhibition); and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. Many telegrams to Brown in March 1954 comment on the tournament. The DuSable Panthers were the first African American boys basketball team with an African American coach to compete in the state finals and the first Chicago team to compete in the finals. Also included in the collection are copies of programs for the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame: 1973, 1974, 1975.
