Custodial History

This collection was assembled from a variety of sources; the largest portion was purchased from the Gunther estate in the 1920s (1923.1000). The Col. Robert Butler papers were purchased from a junk dealer in 1885.

Scope and Content

Correspondence, certificates, muster rolls, military reports, and other documents, including many fragmentary items, relating to Andrew Jackson and various phases of his life and times. Most Jackson correspondence is composed of incoming letters to him. About 34 items in the collection are handwritten or signed by Jackson. Topics in the collection include Jackson's military career, his business affairs, real estate and enslaving transactions, the firm Jackson and Hutchings, and the Donelson family; the War of 1812, the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, and the Battle of New Orleans; the Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole Indians; the U.S. Army, Jean Laffite, Florida, and the annexation of Texas. The oversize folders mostly contain muster rolls, inspection returns, morning reports, ordnance reports, etc. from the era of 1809-1820, some relating to Jackson's troops and some to Col. Robert Butler's commands.

Morgan, James Monroe, Francis Newman, George Nixon, John Overton, Robert Purdy, John Reid, John Rhea, William Tharp, George Walker, and Robert James Walker.
