Correspondence with friends and political constituents; copies of speeches, reports, drafts of legislation, and appointment books; reference files containing newsclippings, letters, and brochures on various civic and political organizations, and other papers of Roland Victor Libonati, a Chicago lawyer (office on the Near West Side) who served as Illinois State Representative, State Senator, and U.S. Congressman (Democrat) from Illinois's Seventh District. Correspondents include Chicago Italian American friends (especially 1920s), his political constituents (1931-1964), and more old friends during his later years.
Scope and Content
Topics include Illinois health issues, bills that he supported in Congress including the 1964 Civil Rights Act, constituents' concerns with social security and veterans' benefit claims, clemency issues, visa and immigration matters, as well as political issues. Also present is correspondence from across the country requesting Congressional action on controversial issues, such as the impeachment of Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren, the legalization of new forms of cancer treatment, and a constitutional amendment to permit school prayer.

Libonati was a lawyer who served as Illinois State Representative, 1931-1935, 1941-1943; State Senator, 1943-1957; and U.S. Representative (Seventh Dist. of Ill.) 1958-1965. He was known as an orator and played a role in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
