Correspondence, texts of sermons, lectures, speeches, articles, and other papers of Rabbi Robert J. Marx of Chicago (Ill.). Topics include the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, for which Marx served as president and board member; the civil rights movement of the 1960s; race relations, especially open housing and equal employment opportunity; opposition to the American Civil Liberties Union's defense of the American Nazi march in Skokie (Ill.); Reform Judaism and Marx's work with the Union of American Hebrew Congregations; Congregation Solel (Highland Park, Ill.) 1968-69, 1973-83; Congregation Hakafa (Glencoe, Ill.); and the civic, political, and ethical responsibilities imposed by religion, particularly Judaism. Includes from the 1990s, flyers, newsletters, and minutes from Congregation Hakafa (Glencoe, Ill.); materials on the National Interfaith Council for Worker Justice; and materials about his service as co-chair of Chicago's Black/ Jewish Dialogue.

Scope and Content

Correspondents include Jean Claude Bofford, a professor of English who corresponded from France (1978-85), the Rev. Jesse Jackson (1978-85). Sermons range from Marx's student days (1940s) to sermons for congregations in the 1950s in Buffalo (N.Y.), and Stamford (Conn.), and in the 1960s and 1970s in Chicago and Highland Park.
