Hans Mattick papers

Scope and Content

Correspondence, reports, and other files of Hans W. Mattick, a Chicago sociologist; topical files on criminal justice; and records of studies he directed, especially the Illinois Selective Service Felon Project (1950-53, re. World War II era), the Chicago Youth Development Project (1958-1966), and the Illinois Jails Survey (1967-68). Materials relate to Mattick's work as an academic, as an employee of government agencies dealing with convicts, and as a social activist. Correspondents include the Illinois Coalition Against the Death Penalty. Included is an annotated copy of Prison Etiquette, edited by Holley Cantine and Dachine Rainer (1950).

Includes the Illinois Selective Service Felon Project records (1950-1953; ca. 9 boxes although related items may be scattered through the collection), including interviews (155 items), code sheets, correspondence, and other records, compiled by Mattick, as a sociologist on the staff of the Illinois Parole and Pardon Board, studying convicts paroled into the U.S. Army during World War II. Includes a printer's proof copy of "Enforcement of the Selective Service Law" (U.S. Govt. Printing Office, 1950).

Includes the Chicago Youth Development Project records (1958-1966; ca. 39 boxes although related items may be scattered through the collection), including extension worker reports, project director's and supervisors' reports, correspondence, and other papers of the action and research program dealing with youths and the prevention of juvenile delinquency in the Chicago Housing Authority's Jane Addams and Henry Horner housing projects and the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago (Ill.). Includes Area 4 YD arrest sheets, referral cards, and evaluations. Project was sponsored by the Chicago Boys Clubs and the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan; financed by a Ford Foundation grant; and directed by Hans W. Mattick.

Includes the Illinois Jails Survey Project records (1967-1968; ca. 26 boxes although related items may be scattered through the collection), including questionnaires (completed 1968), correspondence, work sheets, reports, and other papers for a study of conditions in 101 county jails and 59 city jails, conducted by the Center for Studies in Criminal Justice, at the University of Chicago Law School. Hans W. Mattick served as one of the directors of the project. Includes manuscript of Mattick's and Ronald P. Sweet's report.
