Collection Summary

Correspondence, course applications, teaching and survey materials, newsletters, announcements, newspaper clippings, administrative and financial records, reports, publications, and other records of the Training Center at Hull-House (Chicago, Ill.), sponsored by the National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers. The majority of the collection relates to studies conducted and courses offered by the training center for social workers and leaders of community centers. Some programs were co-sponsored by the Hull House Association. Topics include urbanization, urban renewal, race relations, neighborhoods, childcare, delinquency, employment, poverty, and family planning, primarily involving community centers in large U.S. cities. Also present are the office files of Arthur Hillman, director of the Training Center; a survey report on race relations in the United States, by St. Clair Drake, and research for the report; and a report on Chicago schools, by Mary J. Herrick.

Biographical/historical note

The Training Center at Hull-House was founded in Chicago (Ill.) in 1960 by the National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers (NFSNC), and some of its programs were co-sponsored by the Hull House Association. It operated until 1971 and over the years was known also as the National Federation of Settlements Training Center and as the Training Center of the National Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers. It offered specialized, supplemental short courses and conferences to further the professional education of new social workers as well as more experienced settlement house workers and persons moving into executive positions with neighborhood centers. Sessions were taught by settlement house leaders from throughout the country and housing was provided for program attendees. Arthur Hillman served as director of the center.

During this period, the original building of the Hull-House settlement house in Chicago became a restored house and museum on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago (eventually named the Jane Addams' Hull-House Museum). Meanwhile, the Hull-House social settlement continued to operate as the Hull House Association or Jane Addams' Hull House Association with sites in several neighborhoods. By 1967, the Hull House Association included the Jane Addams Center at 3212 North Broadway; an Uptown Center; a Senior Center; the Henry Booth House at 2328 South Dearborn; and Parkway Community House at 500 East 67th Street.

Organization and Arrangement of Collection

The collection is arranged in seven series.

Series 1. Events and programming materials, 1960-1971 (box 1)

Series 1 consists of announcements, memorandums, course programs, lists of attendees and participants, registration forms, brochures, and other papers related to courses, workshops, conferences, and other events offered by the Training Center at Hull-House. Program topics include community services, urban renewal, roles of the arts in neighborhoods, day care programs, administration of neighborhood centers, and family planning services.

Series 2. Congressional hearings transcripts, 1967-1972 (box 2)

Series 2 consists of published transcripts of United States congressional hearings: Examination of the War on Poverty.

Series 3. Race relations study materials, 1964-1965 (box 3-12; sound at 0MM-67)

Series 3 consists of surveys, questionnaires, interviews, lists of participants and interviewees, survey forms, interview guides, tabulations, annual reports, memorandums, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other papers related to a survey on race relations in neighborhood centers across the United States. Included is a copy of the survey report, which was conducted under the direction of St. Clair Drake and published by NFSNC. Also present are seven, original reel-to-reel sound recordings that are race relations study materials.

Series 4. Neighborhood organization study materials, 1965-1967 (box 13-15)

Series 4 consists of surveys, questionnaires, a directory of member houses, progress reports, notes on conferences, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other papers pertaining to a study of neighborhood organizations conducted in twenty-five cities throughout the United States.

Series 5. Course materials, 1962-1965 (box 15-27)

Series 5 consists of applications, registration forms, lists of attendees, course schedules, evaluations, field and summary reports, correspondence, newsletters, bulletins, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, financial records, and other materials related to courses offered at the Training Center at Hull-House. Course subjects include girls in crisis, young people and work, juvenile delinquency and youth crime, volunteers in services to families and youth, and the role of the arts in youth development. Also present are the publications of the Training Center, such as Girls in Crisis and Serving the Teenage Girl.

Series 6. Other studies materials, 1967-1969 (box 28-31)

Series 6 consists of meeting notes, outlines of reports, newspaper clippings, check requests, pamphlets, case studies, correspondence, and other papers related to studies conducted by the Training Center. Studies represented in the collection include the "Douglas Study" and a study of community schools conducted by Mary J. Herrick.

Series 7. Administrative files, 1960-1971 (box 32-41)

Series 7 is comprised of the Training Center commission minutes (1960-1970), correspondence, announcements, course plans, annual reports, grant proposals, brochures, financial reports, and other administrative materials documenting the daily activities of the organization. Included are the office files of Arthur Hillman (boxes 38-41), director of the Training Center.
