Scope and Content
Office files of the Southwest Community Congress (SCC) in Chicago (Ill.) including topical files, newspaper clippings, committee minutes, correspondence, SCC publications, press releases, annual SCC delegate information sheets, SCC constitution, financial and accounting records, personnel records, fundraising records, photographs, and other organizations' publications. Primarily records of SCC's activities regarding Daley College, Midway Airport, pre-purchase counseling for FHA mortgage buyers, the Chicago Housing Authority, anti-solicitation (real estate), access to fair housing, local transit, a possible Monorail, elementary and secondary education, youth programs, drug abuse, pollution, utilities, health concerns, and the SCC art fair. Also included in the collection are materials documenting the Council of Lawn Neighbors.

Unprocessed collection. This collection has been assessed for access and can be requested except for noted restrictions. Researchers using this collection will need to sign the Access to Unprocessed Collections form. Boxes 1 and 6 from the 1999.0024 accession and Boxes 2-3 from the 2002.0031 accession are restricted due to confidentiality concerns.

Biography or History
The SCC is a coalition of over one hundred civic, religious, and business organizations in Chicago dedicated to improving conditions for residents on the Southwest Side. Founded in 1969, the SCC serves residents and businesses in the West Elsdon, Gage Park, West Lawn, Chicago Lawn, and West Englewood community areas. The SCC is governed through its annual Community Congress and its monthly "issue forum" Senate meetings.
