Scope and Content

Correspondence, reports, minutes, contracts, grievances, arbitrations, appeals to the international union, dues reports, political campaign materials, newsletters, newsclippings, publications, and other records related to the operations of the United Steelworkers of America, District 31, serving northern Illinois and Indiana, and to the activities and policies of USWA's international office in Pittsburgh (Pa.). Topics include the Steelworkers Organizing Committee, local unions and USWA officials in District 31, labor negotiations, worker protests and grievances, union political activity, District 31's construction of apartments designed for but never occupied by union members, and various federal agencies, especially during World War II and the Korean War, among them U.S. Wage Stabilization Board, War Labor Board, and War Manpower Commission. Includes files of international research director Otis Brubaker, international presidents David J. McDonald, Philip Murray, and I. W. Abel, and District 31 directors Joseph Germano and Ed Sadlowski. Includes some original and photocopied materials relating to the event known as the Memorial Day massacre at Republic Steel (May 30, 1937) and its aftermath.
