Biographical note
Paul L. Williams, Jr. is former Illinois State Senator from the 24th district, who retired from politics in 1992. Williams is a graduate of Chicago State University, and successful lawyer in private practice. Williams represented the Illinois Association of Realtors as a lobbyist for 8 years. He also represented the Chicago Real Estate Board, the Greater South Suburban Board of Realtors, and was a special staffer for Shelter II, the special committee of the Chicago board responsible for drafting the industry response and amendments to the Chicago Landlord Tenant Act. He was also an attorney for the Legal Hotline and the Dearborn Real Estate Board. Williams' political career included a focus on real estate issues, the Citizen's Utility Board, elderly abuse and neglect, day care, and prisoner's rights. Williams was also instrumental in creating the special police force of the Chicago Housing Authority, before he retired from politics in 1992.
Scope and Contents note
The collection consists of House and Senate bills, research and correspondence concerning issues of interest to Rep. Williams. In addition, the collection includes an Illinois State Board of Elections certificate; photographs of Paul Williams (two depict him at the initial debating club at CSU); and a legislative bulletin from Earlene Collins, the first African-American woman in the Illinois Senate. Other materials have not been accessioned.
