- The Metz T.P. Lochard papers span from 1926-1984, with the bulk of material from 1960-1980. Correspondence, drafts of editorials, newspaper clippings, and copies of other publications make up the majority of the papers. The papers reflect Lochard's time as editor-in-chief of The Chicago Defender, a prominent African-American newspaper. Metz T.P. Lochard (1896-1984) studied at the Sorbonne at the University of Paris earning L es L and D es L degrees (the French equivalent abbreviations for a Master’s and Doctorate). He then went on to earn a Doctorate degree in English Literature at Oxford University. In 1927, he became associate editor and chief editorial writer of The Chicago Defender, and in 1940, he was named editor-in-chief of the paper.

Biographical/Historical note
Dr. Metz Tullus Paul Lochard (1896-1984) was born in Leogone, Haiti. He studied at the Sorbonne at the University of Paris earning L es L and D es L degrees (the French equivalent abbreviations for a Master’s and Doctorate). He then received a Doctorate degree in English Literature at Oxford University before teaching at Howard University in Washington D.C., North Carolina A. & T. College at Greensboro, and at Fisk University at Nashville. In 1927, Lochard became associate editor and chief editorial writer for The Chicago Defender, an African-American newspaper founded by his close friend, Robert Sengstacke Abbott. In 1940, Lochard was named editor-in-chief of The Chicago Defender, and he continued to be its primary editorial writer into the 1980s. Lochard was a member of the National Conference of Editorial Writers, and in 1960, the National Newspaper Publishers presented Lochard its highest award for excellence in editorial writing.

Scope and Contents note
The Metz T.P. Lochard papers span from 1926-1984, with the bulk of material from 1960-1980. Correspondence, drafts of editorials, newspaper clippings, and other publications make up the majority of the papers. Many of the folders and envelopes throughout the collection include notes and titles originating from Lochard. The papers primarily reflect his time working for The Chicago Defender. Lochard served as editor-in-chief of the paper throughout the Civil Rights movement and many of the clippings and editorials address political and social issues of this time. Of note in the papers are letters from W.E.B. DuBois and an autographed copy of The Weary Blues by Langston Hughes. This collection will be useful for researchers interested in African American history, journalism, the history of the African American Press, and The Chicago Defender. In addition to the Metz T.P. Lochard papers, DuSable Museum of African American History also received Lochard’s personal library.

Inventory
The Correspondence series is arranged chronologically by decade.
The Correspondence series includes both personal and business correspondence of Metz T.P. Lochard. It includes original correspondence, as well as photocopies made by Lochard. “Correspondence” contains letters regarding Lochard’s editorials for The Chicago Defender, personal letters, invitations, thank you notes, solicitations, and get well cards. Notable correspondence in the series includes signed letters from W.E.B. DuBois. This series also contains a bound inventory of items in the Metz T.P. Lochard Papers at Howard University.

The Writings by others series is comprised of written work by various known and unknown authors, some of which was edited by Lochard.
The Writings edited by Lochard subseries includes one folder of typed writings by unknown authors with personal notes and marks made by Lochard. This subseries also includes an edited copy of the manuscript, “Black Press-ure,” by Enoch P. Waters. This manuscript became “American Diary: A Personal History of the Black Press” and was published by Path Press in 1987.

The S.I. Hayakawa Solicitation subseries includes previously written columns by S. I. Hayakawa that were distributed by the Register and Tribune Syndicate of Des Moines. Hayakawa sent the columns to Lochard to provide an example of his work and express interest in being published by The Chicago Defender.
