Historical note
The Good Shepherd Parish Metropolitan Community Church was chartered in Chicago in 1970 by the Reverend Arthur Green. The Metropolitan Community Church doctrine included open acceptance and welcoming of gays and lesbians, and Good Shepherd Parish was the first MCC to minister specifically to Chicago's gay community. Among its efforts at outreach to the community were its participation in the Night Ministry in the Lake View neighborhood, care for AIDS patients, and ministry in state prisons. The church closed in 2007 due to declining membership.
Scope and Contents note
The collection includes the records of Reverend Ken Martin, who expanded the church's outreach to the community; Treasurer's Files; committee records; audiovisual materials; financial records; and materials related to the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches.
Processing Information note
This collection was surveyed as part of the Black Metropolis Research Consortium's Survey Initiative on 2011 November 22 by Andrew Steadham.
