Biographical note
Born February 22, 1923 in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Adlean Harris was raised by her maternal grandmother, Jennie Stewart. She married at age twenty-one and moved to Chicago shortly after with her husband. Adlean Harris went to work at an ice cream cone factory packing ice cream cones. She separated from her husband in 1952. Harris then went to work at the Safety Glove factory in the Miscellaneous Department.
Harris described herself as “a late bloomer” in regard to her education. At age forty-three, she took and passed a GED test. She then enrolled at Kennedy King City College and graduated with an Associate Degree in Library Science. She continued her education at Governor State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Ethnic Studies in 1972. While at Governor State University, Harris was offered a position as Reference Librarian with the stipulation that she would complete her Masters of Library Science degree by 1974. She received her Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois, Urbana in August of 1974.
In 1977, Harris received a Doctorate from Union Institute in Information Resources in Black Studies. She was then appointed as a Subject Specialist in Africa, African American and Hispanic Studies to the College of Cultural Studies at Governor State University. She retired from this position in 1985.
Adlean Harris co-founded the Chicago Chapter of the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS) in 1989 at the Carter G. Woodson Library with Robert Miller (curator of the Harsh Collections) and Curtis Brasfield (certified genealogist and special education teacher in the Chicago public school system). The group was known as the Harsh Researchers, a name given by Robert Miller. In March 1990, the group had to change its name because it was against the policy of the library to be involved in the collection of money at events.
The name was changed to the Patricia Liddell Researchers. The late Patricia Liddell (1943-1987) lived in the Chicago area for forty years and worked as a revenue agent for the Internal Revenue Service for over seventeen years. Liddell was a genealogy enthusiast who was active in the Monroe County Historical Society in Georgia, The Fred Hart Williams Genealogical Society in Detroit, and the Afro-American Genealogical Society of Chicago. The Patricia Liddell Researchers (PLR) is a teaching/research organization. Its meetings and programs are set up for participants to learn, network, and socialize. The Patricia Liddell Researchers organizes scholarly lectures/forums, workshops, and other events. In June 1991 the group presented a mini-workshop coordinated by Adlean Harris on “Genealogy Research at the Library” at the Carter G. Woodson Library.
Adlean Harris was a member of the American Library Association, Chicago Librarians Black Caucus, and Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. In addition, she had a great interest in astrology; Harris was a member of the American Federation of Astrologers Incorporated and the Friends of Astrology in Chicago. Harris died in 2011 at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia at age eighty-eight.
