Biographical/Historical note
Chandler Owen co-founded the radical journal The Messenger with A. Philip Randolph, served as managing editor of the Chicago Bee, and gradually moved his political allegiance from Socialism to the Republican Party. He wrote a number of speeches for Republican Presidential candidates, including Wendell Wilkie, Thomas Dewey, and Dwight Eisenhower.
Scope and Contents note
The small collection appears to be the research papers of Theodore Kornweibel, an African American studies professor at San Deigo State University who was presumably studying Owen. It consists primarily of typescripts of Chandler Owen's speeches and essays, most of which concern African Americans and the Republican Party.
Processing Information note
This collection was surveyed as part of the Black Metropolis Research Consortium's Survey Initiative on 2011 November 17 by Andrew Steadham.
