Available for research in the Special Collections and Preservation Division Reading Room of the Chicago Public Library. Researchers, please request this material 24 hours in advance of use. Most tapes are VHS format, but some are BETA or other formats. The non-VHS tapes can be converted for research use in the Reading Room.
Conditions Governing Use
To use the tapes for purposes other than research, patrons need to contact the copyright holder because copyright is not held by the Library in most cases.

Biography or History
Harold Washington was the first African American mayor of Chicago, elected in 1983. He began a second term in 1987 before passing away in office November 25, 1987.
Scope and Content
During Harold Washington's political career, a video tape collection was maintained. These tapes give researchers a glimpse of issues of the day -- in many cases, literally of the day, as news programs were regularly recorded. The project was dynamic and ongoing -- some tapes were saved, while others were recorded over with new material.
Arrangement
The tapes are grouped into 10 series: Series 1: Newslogs, Series 2: Newslogs by Channel, Series 3: Subject News Segments by Channel, Series 4: Departments, Series 5: Festival/City Event, Series 6: Campaign, Series 7: Harold Washington Individual Interview/Trips/City Council, Series 8: PSAs (Public Service Announcements), and Series 10: Miscellaneous. Most tapes are organized chronologically.
