Transferred from the Woodlawn Branch of CPL, with funding from a Scholl Foundation grant, in October 1984.
Custodial History
The UWI's records were donated to the Historical Society of Woodlawn and subsequently housed at the Woodlawn Branch of the Chicago Public Library.

Biographical / Historical
The stated objective of the United Woodlawn, Inc. (UWI) was, "the protection and improvement of the mutual interests of its members in that district of Chicago known as Woodlawn." On May 18, 1953, the UWI and the Woodlawn Neighborhood Conference merged to form a new organization, the United Woodlawn Conference.
Scope and Contents
The Papers of United Woodlawn Inc. (UWI), primarily from 1949 to 1952, document that organization's efforts on behalf of neighborhood improvement projects. Included in the collection are administrative files papers concerning the UWI's constitution and by-laws, membership rosters, minutes of meetings, letters to the UWI's executive board, and reports. The UWI's newsletter, Voice of Woodlawn, was how the UWI communicated with and mobilized its members. The collection includes a complete run of the Voice of Woodlawn. Other printed materials include handout and fliers publicizing the UWI's sponsored events such as contests, campaigns and special meeting announcements.
