Biographical note
Joanne Marten was a graduate student of photography in the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology's school of design.
Scope and Contents note
The Institute of Design records are academic, historical, and creative materials from ID ca. 1948-2001. This collection includes output from individual students and class projects in photography, product design, industrial design, visual design, art education, printmaking, and filmmaking; essays and articles by and about faculty members; articles, papers, and syllabi that faculty used for their classes; newspaper clippings; materials related to the history of ID, including retrospectives from the 50th anniversary celebration; awards and accolades; and special exhibits and projects in which ID participated or hosted. Box 131 contains Joanne Marten's photography theses, "The Negro." Her project is comprised of 62 photographs from 1962-65 taken in three locations: Chicago, Alabama, Washington D.C. Photographs taken in Chicago and Alabama include images from Civil Rights marches and local family life from 1962-1965. The material from Washington D.C. is from the 1963 March on Washington.
