Dorothy Chaplik papers

Biographical note

Dorothy Chaplik was born on June 15, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois, to Isidore and Marion Rose Goldberg. She lived almost entirely in Chicago until 1951 when she moved to Evanston and later to Skokie, Illinois. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Chicago in 1939 and attended Schurz Junior College the following year. On July 3, 1946, Dorothy married Seymour Chaplik, M.D., a medical officer in the U.S. Army. The couple had two children, Barbara and Linda. In 1973, Dorothy earned her bachelor’s degree from Mundelein College in Chicago, majoring in humanities with an emphasis on Latin American studies. From 1962 until 1974, she served as a staff assistant at the Art Institute of Chicago and from 1975 until 1990 she lectured on European and Latin American art at various institutions, including the Chicago Cultural Center, the Ray College of Design in Schaumburg, Illinois, and numerous schools and private organizations. She published Latin American Art: An Introduction to the Works of the 20th Century in 1989, Latin American Arts and Cultures in 2001, and Defining Latin American Art in 2005. Her first publication was a biography of Jesse Jackson, Up with Hope: A Biography of Jesse Jackson, published in 1986.
