Abstract
The Horace S. Graves, Jr. (1897-1981) papers are comprised of materials documenting Horace S. Graves, Jr., who was an African-American funeral director, real estate agent, and insurance salesman in Evanston, Illinois. He was an active member of several organizations including: Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Norshore Twelve, Inc., and the American Legion. The collection material dates from 1923 to 1981 and focuses on Horace S. Graves, Jr.'s career as an undertaker and funeral director in Evanston, Illinois as well as his community involvement. There are also a few photographs of his father, Horace S. Graves, Sr., who served as minister of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church from 1911 to 1912 and died in 1913.

Biographical/Historical note

Horace S. Graves, Jr. (1897-1981) was an African-American funeral director, real estate agent, and insurance salesman in Evanston, Illinois. Graves was also an active member of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, where his father, Horace Sr. Graves, Sr. had served as minister from 1911 to 1912, and the Norshore Twelve, Inc., a social and civic club, which served the communities of Chicagoland's North Shore region. Horace S. Graves, Jr. was also a member of Evanston's Garnett Post American Legion. He died in 1981.

The Horace S. Graves, Jr. papers are arranged into three series: “Personal and Professional,” “Photographs,” and “Artifacts.” The collection material dates from 1923 to 1981 and focuses on Horace S. Graves, Jr.'s career as an undertaker and funeral director in Evanston, Illinois as well as his community involvement.
