Abstract
The Links, Incorporated is an African American professional women's organization founded in 1946 with chapters throughout the United States. The North Shore Illinois Chapter of the Links, Inc. was established in 1972, encompassing members in Chicago's suburban northern and northwest suburbs. The collection was assembled by Shorefront Legacy Center with the majority of the collection coming from North Shore Links member Margo Robinson. The collection contains meeting minutes, membership lists, bylaws, photographs, invitations, and advertisement books.

Biographical/Historical note

Established in 1946, The Links, Inc. is an international, not-for-profit corporation with a membership of 12,000 African American professional women making up 274 chapters in 42 states, the District of Columbia, and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. It is one of the nation's oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of African American women. The Links, Inc. is committed to enriching, sustaining, and ensuring the cultural and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. Sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of The Links, Inc., The North Shore Illinois Chapter became a part of The Links, Inc. and the Central Area of The Links, Inc. on November 19, 1972. At the time, the Chicago Chapter was the only Links, Inc. chapter in the Chicagoland area; currently, there are eight chapters in the metro area. The North Shore Illinois Chapter of The Links, Inc. began with 25 official members and one honorary member. The honorary member was Etta Moten Barnett, whose membership later became official.

The North Shore Illinois Chapter of the Links, Incorporated collection is arranged into four series, “Organizational,” “Community Programs and Involvement,” “Photographs,” and “Audio-Visual.” It contains material documenting the history and activities of the North Shore Illinois Chapter of the Links, Incorporated from 1946 to 2011. The collection is comprised of meeting minutes, agendas, newspaper clippings, membership information, directories, publications, event invitations and flyers, community program files, awards, certificates, photographs, and audio-visual records.
