Biographical/Historical note

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was founded in 1909, “to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate race-based discrimination.” After the establishment of the national organization, smaller chapters were formed to provide a sense of community and belonging to the larger entity.

Founded in 1928, the Evanston Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) upholds the mission, “to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of minority group citizens of the United States and eliminate race prejudice... to remove all barriers of racial discrimination through the democratic processes” on both the national and local levels. The records within this collection begin in 1903 and span through 2010. The organization is involved in leadership for the Evanston’s black community.
