Biographical note

Annetta Dieckmann (1888-1974) was a pioneer in women’s rights and welfare work. She was appointed the first industrial secretary for the National Board of the Young Women’s Christian Association in 1918. In 1924, she moved to Chicago and served as the industrial secretary of the Chicago YWCA. Upon her retirement in 1956, Annetta Dieckmann became a full-time volunteer as secretary of the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. In this position, she developed statewide educational programs about the civil liberties of women.

The Annetta Dieckmann Papers include correspondence, clippings, notes, reports, minutes of meetings, biographical vitae, legal briefs, financial records, publications newsletters, manuscripts, personal mementos, poetry, songs and photographs pertaining to the life and professional service of Annetta M. Dieckmann. The materials pertain to such topics as the American Civil Liberties Union, Hyde Park, Cornell University, labor education, and the Young Women’s Christian Association.
