Biography/Profile

The Suburban Civic and Equal Suffrage Association of Oak Park, Illinois, was organized around 1909. The organization shortened its name to the Oak Park Civic League after women gained the right to vote and became the Oak Park League of Women Voters in 1924, ultimately known as the League of Women Voters of Oak Park - River Forest. The group organized large meetings at which members of different political parties including progressive and third parties were invited to address pertinent issues of the day. Membership in the League declined from an overall high of 600 to only 56 members as of November 21, 1934. The organization began to regain its strength as time passed, however, and cooperated with other community organizations such as the Oak Park Council on International Affairs to produce larger events.
