Peter Rompon was a member of the International Association of Jazz Record Collectors and collected big band, swing, Condon style, modern mainstream, bop, modern big band, and jazz vocal records.
Scope Note
The Peter Rompon Collection has been divided into four series: Series I, Method Books and Arrangements; Series II, Publications; Series III, Catalogs and Discographies; Series IV, Newspapers and Oversize. The Peter Rompon Collection consists of periodicals, catalogs, discographies and record lists. There are also handwritten music and arrangements, songbooks, and fake books, which are informal collections of scores used by performing musicians and as a tool for learning.
Series I, Method Books and Arrangements, contains fake books, songbooks, and handwritten music. Arrangers, such as Michael Edwards, Bill Howard, Johnny Warrington, and Ben Kendall compiled popular jazz and swing tunes for combo groups as well as solo instruments. The songbooks feature popular songs arranged for ukulele. Also included are saxophone pedagogy books. See Series IV for additional handwritten music.
Series II, Publications, contains various issues of jazz periodicals and newsletters, including Cadence, Gene Lees Jazzletter, Coda Magazine, and Midwest Jazz. There are books on jazz and musicians, including Satchmo an autobiography written by Louis Armstrong. Also included are newspaper articles, some of which are from The Chicago Tribune, featuring jazz artists and musicians including Roy Eldridge, Carmen McRae, Charlie Parker, and Cecil Taylor.
Series III, Catalogs and Discographies, contains record lists compiled by Roger D. Kinkle. There are record catalogs including Artists House, Delmark, Emily Records, Everest Records, Folkway Records, Inner City/Classic Jazz, Jazz Program, MCA, Pickwick, Record Finders, Record Research, Time-Life Records, Xanadu Records, and Zim Records. There are order requests and forms from Rompon to the editors of the music catalog The Record Round-up. The discographies and solographies are of various musicians, including Bunny Berigan, Coleman Hawkins, Gene Krupa, Ben Webster, and Lester Young. See Series IV for an additional catalog.
Series IV, Newspapers and Oversize, contains various issues of The Reader, Radio Free Jazz, Jazz Times, and Joslin's Jazz Journal. There is also oversize handwritten music and a catalog.
