“Greenlining the Ghetto: Housing Rehabilitation & Black Power Politics”, 2025 BMRC Fellows Fall Presentation by Eric Peterson – Oct 29, 2025
October 13, 2025
The Black Metropolis Research Consortium (BMRC) invites you to join us on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm CST for a virtual presentation in the 2025 Fellows Fall Speaker Series. Dr. Eric Peterson will share the results of his research on "Greenlining the Ghetto: Housing Rehabilitation & Black Power Politics."
Dr. Eric Peterson works as a labor organizer and researcher in the Bay Area. His research centers on the politics of homeownership, tenancy, race and the built environment. As a BMRC short-term research fellow in 2016 and 2025, he examined the history of efforts to increase working-class ownership of housing in majority Black neighborhoods in Chicago from the 1960s-1980s. He holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
Discussant: Dr. Catherine Fennell, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, Columbia University. An urban anthropologist jointly appointed in the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race. Her research explores how the legacies of 20th-century urbanism shape contemporary politics of social difference, collective responsibility, and urban transformation in the U.S., with a focus on subsidized housing and changing built environments. Her award-winning book, Last Project Standing, received the 2016 Book Prize from the Association of Political and Legal Anthropology.
