Biographical Note
The William Earl Washington Jr. collection contains items found at the Washington family home in Chicago, Illinois. The eldest member of the William Earl Washington Family lineage on his maternal side is Richard S. Brown (1818- June 9, 1892). Brown was a runaway slave from Virginia who settled in Boston, Massachusetts. Brown married Elizabeth Lewis and had a daughter named Theodosia.
Brown was the second African American to be appointed as a customs inspector in Boston, Massachusetts. He successfully sued a skating rink to enforce admission policies to desegregate, allowing access for his African American grandchildren, Louisa Lewis and Richard H. Lewis.
Richard H. Lewis attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he died in an accident on campus. Louisa married William Henry Washington on March 20, 1885 in Boston Massachusetts.
On March 20, 1885, William Earl Washington was born in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1898, the couple relocated to Chicago. William Earl Washington worked as a manager for the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Earl Washington married Dorothy Bailey in Chicago on March 20, 1942. Bailey had two sons from a previous marriage but together they had no children. On October 30, 1972, Washington was hit by a vehicle while fueling his vehicle and was killed.
Condition Note
Several of the pictures in this collection are mounted on canvas and are very fragile they may be looked at but not handled.
Scope and Contents note
The William Earl Washington Jr. collection spans from 1847 through 1979 and is comprised of six series containing family documents, Washington family genealogical records, photographs, realia, Sears Catalogs, and books. The majority of the collection is family photographs; Richard H. Lewis' school textbooks and class notes are part of the collection. Throughout the collection are images, documents, and items that pertain to many of the distant family members. Many of the other documents within the collection provide additional insight for understanding the Washington family. Attempts were made to keep items from the same time periods together. Some items in the collection are not identified and are undated.
Processing Information note
Processed by CLIR funded Black Metropolis Research Consortium “Color Curtain Processing Project.” Processor: Angelique Schuler
Provenance:
This collection was found by Sherry Williams in her home. The Washington family was a previous owner of that same home and the items in the collection were found there when Ms. Williams moved into the house. Upon finding the collection, Sherry Williams traced the Washington's genealogy to provide better historical understanding for the family. Ms. Williams offered it to Washington’s stepson but he preferred that Ms. Williams to keep the collection at the Bronzeville Historical Society for educational purposes.
