Scope and Content
Correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, press releases, testimonials, and other papers relating to the career of William L. Dawson, a Chicago (Ill.) lawyer, alderman of the 2nd Ward, and U.S. Congressman (Democrat from the 1st District of Illinois; 1943-1970). He succeeded Arthur W. Mitchell as the second African American Democrat to represent the 1st District. Collection includes some material on the elections of 1944, 1948, 1952, and 1964, and a few letters from presidents Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson.
