Biographical note

Dr. Mendelsohn was known for his outspoken criticism of some aspects of the medical establishment. Mendelsohn wrote several books, as well as a syndicated newspaper column, "The People's Doctor." In addition to his medical practice, he served as director of the Cook County Head Start program, director of medical consultation for the federal Head Start program, and operated the New Medical Foundation in Chicago. He died at age 61 in Evanston (Ill.).

Correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, and other papers of pediatrician Dr. Robert Mendelsohn, who served as director of Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago (Ill.). Topics include Dr. Mendelsohn's advocacy for the home birth movement (1970s) and his service to the Head Start program in Cook County and nationally.

Gift of Dr. Mendelsohn's widow, Rita Mendelsohn, in 1993.
