Corporal, 40th Illinois Infantry.
Scope and Content
Letters (chiefly from Mississippi and Tennessee) from Corporal Ross of the 40th Illinois Infantry to his family in Vandalia. Significantly mentioned are: the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth, Miss., and the attitudes of Ross and other Union soldiers to the emancipating and arming of Black people. Includes 19 letters and 11 envelopes.
