Biographical note
White was an African American born in Baltimore. He enlisted in the army at age 33 or 34 as an engineer and served as a sergeant in the 3rd Missouri Colored Infantry Volunteers (which became the 67th Regiment of Colored Infantry in 1864). On May 16, 1863, he was promoted to the 1st Regiment Mississippi Volunteers (which eventually merged into the 51st Regiment of Colored Infantry). White was discharged as a captain from the 51st Regiment of the U.S. Colored Infantry on June 16, 1866.
