Biographical note
Fritz Veit was born Siegfried Fritz Veit on September 17, 1907 in Emmeringen, Germany. When the Nazis came to power he fled Germany, settling for two years in Paris before reaching the United States in 1935. After working for several years at the University of Chicago as Social Science Librarian and Acting Law Librarian, he became Director of Libraries at Chicago Teachers College and Kennedy King College in 1949. He also managed the library at Englewood Evening Junior College and served as law librarian for the U.S. Railroad Retirement Board from 1943 to 1948.
Scope and Contents note
The papers include course and reading notes, correspondence, off-prints of articles and reviews, certificates, photographs, and administrative materials. The earliest material contains correspondence in Germany regarding the conduct of research for his Dr. Jur. in 1930-31. Box 6 contains the original questionnaires used as the foundation of Veit’s Presidential Libraries and Collections. Extensive material from the library science courses he taught at various institutions, including handwritten lectures, are located in boxes 3, 4, and 5.
