Biographical/Historical note
Harold Washington filed as a mayoral candidate in December 1982. Congressman Harold Washington won the Democratic Primary on February 22, 1983. He defeated both Mayor Jane M. Byrne and Illinois States Attorney Richard M. Daley in that political race. He carried the Mayoral General Election on April 12, 1983 against Republican candidate Bernard E. Epton. Washington was elected in 1983 and reelected in 1987. Harold Washington died at 1:36 PM on November 25, 1987 of a cardiac arrest.
