Scope and Contents note
Some of the materials relevant to African American History in the collection include two end of year reports about the Chicago Area Health and Medical Careers Program. The reports were written by E. F. Stueben, the Project Director and Sidney A. Guralnick, Vice President and Provost of IIT. The program was a partnership between IIT and other area Chicago medical program and its purpose was to increase the number of minorities and under represented groups in the professional medical field. The program recruited primarily high school students in their junior and senior years of school and offered and intensive summer program which included courses and presentations conducted by medical doctors and professionals. The program also offered guidance on getting into undergraduate schools and also guidance on how to navigate successfully through a pre medical course program in undergraduate school. The reports are for the years 1979-1980 and 1980-1981. The collection also includes a voting card which includes the name of Lerone Bennet from 1977. Bennet was an author and an editor for the Johnson Publishing Co, publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines. The ballot was for the election of the Education Committee members of Chicago Public Television. The collection also contains material related to IIT's 1973-77 "Minorities in Engineering" program. The program targeted junior year high school students to raise interest in careers in engineering. The collection includes the initial project proposal, press releases regarding the program, annual reports that highlight program history/average GPA for participating students/breakdown of participation by race/participating businesses/and future goals of the program. A small folder containing South Side Planning Board meeting minutes and agendas that follow building development on the South Side of Chicago is also present.
