Biogrpahical note
Henry J. Hyde was a Republican member of the House of Representatives from 1975 to 2007, representing the 6th district of Illinois. He chaired the Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001, and the House International Relations Committee from 2001 to 2007.
Scope and Contents note
The Henry J. Hyde papers consist of approximately 400 linear feet spanning the years 1974 to 2006, the full duration of Hyde’s tenure in the U.S. Congress. The materials include constituent correspondence, mailings, published reports, scrapbooks, photographs, and memorabilia. Topics include many of Hyde’s legislative priorities, including his opposition to abortion, his sponsorship of gun control laws, and the reform of the United Nations, as well as his role in investigating the Iran-Contra affair and the President Clinton impeachment trial.
