Historical note
Founded in 1949 as a branch of Chicago Teachers College on the North Side of Chicago and established as an independent institution in 1967, Northeastern Illinois State College was granted university status in 1971. Today, Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) is a public state university serving approximately 12,000 students with more than 70 undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts, sciences, education and business.
