Abstract
On May 3, 1968 more than 100 undergraduate and graduate students occupied the Bursar's Office, in the first major sit-in experienced at Northwestern University. After the students' April 22nd list of demands were not met, they declared their intention to keep the office occupied until these demands were met. This peaceful 38-hour occupation ended with University leaders negotiating with students, and committing to enhance services and support for Black students related to admissions, scholarships, housing, curriculum, counseling and facilities; the latter resulting in the establishment of The Black House. This compilation documenting the Black Student sit-in provides an overview of the issues, events, and results of the strike. The compilation consists of clippings, reports, correspondence, and other documents, from a variety of sources.

Scope and Contents

This compilation of materials from a variety of sources fills three folders. The bulk of the material dates specifically from the time of the strike in Spring, 1968, but there are also later documents reflecting back or referring to it. An initial folder contains a copy of the relevant pages from Northwestern University: A History, 1850-1976 to provide basic context. The next folder contains newspaper clippings from local and national newspapers reporting or commenting on the strike. The final folder contains correspondence, flyers, reports, demands and responses, and other documents.
