Historical Note

The Ebenezer A.M.E. Church was the first African-American church established in Evanston, Illinois. Formed in 1882, it grew out of a prayer meeting at the home of Richard Day and developed into a full religious program, including a number of choirs (Senior, Gospel, Youth, and Children's) as well as strong community involvement. Still functioning, the Ebenezer A.M.E Church's history, from its founding to its recent history, is chronicled in this collection.
