Chad Allen Helsup, stage name MC Longshot, is a hip-hop rapper from the Southside of Chicago, IL. The collection includes diaries, song lyrics, recording contracts, photographs, hotel key cards, and audio-visual recordings.

Biographical Note

Chad was born in Chicago, IL. At the age of 8 years old, him and his siblings were placed in foster care due to his mother’s drug addiction. Chad grew up in an Evanston foster home during the ages of 13-18. Chad played football at Loyola H.S. but ended his football career after a devastating injury. This sparked his interest in music and began performing rap lyrics at 19. Chad signed his first recording contract performing under the name MC Longshot with Moleman Inc., in 2003. In 2009, MC Longshot signed a recording contract with RhymeSayers after winning a lyrical contest online for up and coming emcees. He currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Scope and Contents note

The Chad Allen Helsup series is organized into two series: “Personal files” and “Music Business” The collection largely spans from 2002-2006 following the rise of MC Longshot’s musical career and national tours with various United States hip-hop artists. Since 2003, MC Longshot as recorded six albums, recorded two albums as a part of the duo “Coppershot” and was featured on several albums. MC Longshot has toured with Jean Grae, Brother Ali, People Under the Stairs, along with many other underground and prominent hip-hop artists. Currently, MC Longshot shares his music online with his Facebook and Twitter followers.

Scope and Contents note

This series is comprised of material related to the personal life of MC Longshot. A birth certificate, self published book of poetry, lyrics, personal journal entries, notes regarding tour schedules, photographs of a friend, Heili and producer, Lee Chestafeel, greeting cards from family members and friends. Jail forms and prison identification cards involving MC Longshot’s arrest and imprisonment are included in this collection.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains material related to MC Longshot’s recording agreement with EV Productions and Moleman productions. Coppershot (MC Longshot and partner Daniel Kuypers) recording agreement with EV Productions. It also includes management agreement with Unchained productions, copyright registration form, and promotional materials such as flyers, a t-shirt with the Longshot logo, press releases, a television interview with Chad, stickers, and posters. Included are documents, backstage passes and hotel key cards from music tours attended by MC Longshot as a performer. This series also contains business cards given to MC Longshot by people in the music industry and CD’s from MC Longshot and Coppershot.
