- The Shorefront Legacy Center Research Files collection consists of material gathered on a variety of subjects relating to the African American experience, especially in Evanston, Illinois and its surrounding suburbs. The collection spans from 1880-2011 and includes writings, newspaper clippings, church bulletins, notes, exhibit material, photographs, and oral histories relating to African Americans in the Greater-Chicago area.
Historical Note
The files comprising the Shorefront Legacy Center Research Files were complied by the Center from various sources. The materials deal with the African American experience in Evanston, Illinois and its surrounding suburbs including Pembroke, Illinois; Lake Forest, Illinois; and Glencoe, Illinois.
Scope and Contents note
This collection is arranged into eight series: “The History of Pembroke,” “Lake Forest African American Residents,” “Glencoe African American Residents,” “Evanston Barber and Beauty Shops,” “Evanston African American Churches,” “Illinois African American History,” “General African American History,” and “African American Scholarship Programs.” It spans from 1880-2011 and includes writings, newspaper clippings, church bulletins, notes, exhibit material, photographs, and oral histories relating to African Americans in the Greater-Chicago area.
