- The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the first intercollegiate, African-American fraternal organization for men, was formed at Cornell in 1906 to promote and defend African-American civil rights. The Zeta Xi Lambda chapter was formed in Evanston, Illinois in 1956. The Zeta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Collection spans from 1942 to 1997 and contains information relating to the chartering of the chapter, By-Laws, membership, and photographs.
Biographical/Historical note
Formed to promote, defend, and educate the African-Americans and give voice to their struggle, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was founded on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University by seven undergraduates known as the “The Seven Jewels.” It was also the first African-American intercollegiate fraternity for men. The Zeta Xi Lambda chapter was chartered in Evanston, Illinois in 1956.

The Zeta Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Collection is arranged into four series: “History,” “Membership,” “Correspondence,” and “Photographs.” The collection spans from 1942-1997, but the bulk of the material is from 1986-1987, and the material primarily reflects the clubs' membership and meetings from this time. New additions to the collection spans 1950-1970.
