Custodial History

Most of the collection was the gift of Catholic Inter-Racial Council of Chicago (M1969.0005, M1973.0026). Sound recordings were the gift of Marquette University Archives (1989.0591).

Biography or History

CIC was established in 1945. The name is sometimes spelled Catholic Interracial Council.

Scope and Content

Correspondence, memoranda, reports, financial and fund raising records concerning the Catholic Inter-Racial Council of Chicago's efforts to promote racial justice within the Archdiocese of Chicago (Ill.), the Roman Catholic Church, and in society in general. Topics include specific instances of racial discrimination in Chicago churches, schools, housing, hospitals, and other agencies and in employment. Correspondents include council officers Lloyd Davis, John A. McDermott, and R. Sargent Shriver.

Includes sound recordings relating to the activities of the CIC, 1964-1967.
