The Associated Negro Press (1919-1967) was established in Chicago by Claude Barnett. It was the first black news wire service and the majority of its stories were about news affecting African Americans.
Scope and Contents note
The collection consists of press releases and two poems (Prelude to Our Age and Goodbye Christ) by Langston Hughes. The press releases cover civil rights activities, court decisions, legislation, United Nations news, music reviews, reports on black colleges and churches, and several obituaries, including a tribute to C.C. Spaulding. Articles report on Adam Clayton Powell, John F. Kennedy, and on Harry Truman's farewell address.
